Ethereum Transforms into 'Cryptographic World Computer' Amid Regulatory Advances
Ethereum is evolving into a 'cryptographic world computer', as described by Vitalik Buterin. This shift will bring significant improvements in scalability, privacy, and censorship resistance to the network. The process began with the deployment of PeerDAS, which has enabled Ethereum to transition from a plain blockchain to a more complex system that combines blockchains, cryptographic privacy, and verification.
The upcoming Hegotá upgrade next year may be Ethereum's last 'regular upgrade' in its current form. Subsequent upgrades will involve advanced technologies such as recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, highly optimized consensus algorithms, and post-quantum cryptography. This marks a significant departure from the network's original design and architecture.
Regulatory developments are also taking shape. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has stated that the agency is working to advance regulatory arrangements for on-chain financing and tokenized securities trading. The Innovation Exemption framework allows firms to issue tokenized securities representing actual rights and interests in underlying securities, enabling these assets to be traded on-chain.
El Salvador's national blockchain super app, Sivar, has launched, offering transfer, remittance, and cash withdrawal services for local users and those abroad. The wallet supports holding and transferring stablecoins via Coinbase's Base network and operates under a self-custody model with no central authority control.
