Ethereum Transitions from Blockchain to Cryptographic World Computer
Ethereum is undergoing a significant transformation, according to its co-founder Vitalik Buterin. In a recent post, he outlined plans for Ethereum's future, which will move beyond being a traditional blockchain and instead become a 'cryptographic world computer.'
This new framework will combine blockchain consensus with cryptographic methods such as zero-knowledge proofs, FOCIL (EIP-7805), proof aggregation, and stronger privacy. The goal is to make verification more lightweight and distribute the processing of transactions and blocks among multiple participants.
The transition will also involve significant changes to how operations are verified on Ethereum. Traditional blockchains require nodes to download and run all transactions, but Buterin believes that data sampling and verifying cryptographic proofs will increasingly take their place.
Ethereum's next major upgrade, Hegotá, is expected to take place in 2027 and will implement FOCIL as part of a larger plan for multi-party block building and enhanced censorship resistance. Subsequent upgrades may focus on recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, and optimization of consensus.
