Ethereum Upgrade Schedule Hit by Another Delay as Verkle Trie Migration Pushed Back

The Ethereum upgrade schedule has taken another hit as researchers have pivoted towards a binary tree design under EIP-7864 in 2026. This change, aimed at addressing concerns about quantum risk and polynomial math computational weight, has shifted the trajectory for Verkle trie migration.

As a result of this new direction, the timeline for state migration has been pushed further out, with the Verkle trie migration now expected to take place in 2027. This delay follows a similar postponement after the September EOF event, which had already pushed back the original timeline.

The current structure of the Ethereum network requires clients to store 150 GB of data, including all Merkle proofs, and this amount increases by roughly half every year. In contrast, Verkle trees would reduce witness sizes from 3.5 MB to 150 kB, allowing stateless clients to verify blocks within a 12-second slot without needing the full state database.

The Ethereum upgrade schedule relies on a sequence of tightly scoped forks, with Fusaka going live in December 2025 and bringing PeerDAS and increased blob capacity. Glamsterdam is expected to reach final devnet testing in mid-2026 and aims for Q3 activation, while Hegota will follow but its timing depends on the success of the preceding upgrade.

The transition to Verkle trees is complex due to the need for a new data structure and migration strategy. Developers are currently evaluating EIP-8141 for Hegota, but client teams like Nethermind and Besu have argued that the feature is too heavy for headliner status.
