Ethereum Upgrade Sparks Staking Competition Between Coinbase and Kraken
The Ethereum network has undergone significant changes with the Pectra upgrade, which increases the maximum effective balance per validator to 2,048 ETH and allows consensus-layer rewards to compound automatically.
As a result of these protocol shifts, Coinbase and Kraken are competing for staking market share. While both platforms offer staking services, they have different fee structures and asset offerings.
Kraken provides access to over 20 assets for staking, whereas Coinbase manages approximately 7 assets. However, users must navigate different fee structures for bonded and flexible options on Kraken, which can maximize their yields.
Regarding security, both platforms have experienced incidents in the past. In May 2025, Coinbase suffered a data breach where bribed contractors stole information from 70,000 customers. In contrast, Kraken reported a single incident in 2024 involving a $3 million bug bounty dispute.
