Ethereum Validator Count Drops as Staked ETH Hits New High
Ethereum's validator count has dropped to around 863,459 to 868,000 as of October 6, 2026, despite a record high in staked ETH. The network now holds approximately 43.7 million ETH staked, up from 36.3 million at the start of the year. This decline is not due to an exodus but rather a consolidation effort enabled by the Pectra upgrade.
The validator count fell by about 4.9% in the past month, down from nearly 975,000 at the beginning of 2026. The Pectra upgrade, which launched on May 7, 2025, introduced EIP-7251, allowing validators to merge balances without withdrawing their ETH. This change raised the effective balance cap from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH per validator, streamlining operations and enabling auto-compounding rewards.
Lido, the largest staking provider on Ethereum, is leading this trend by merging over 265,000 individual validators into around 4,000 larger ones. If completed, this could reduce the overall validator population by about one-third. Meanwhile, Ethereum's exit queue has surged to hundreds of thousands of ETH, while entry waits remain significant.
For investors, the rise in staked ETH to over 35.8% of Ethereum's total supply signals strong demand for staking rewards. However, the decline in validator count does not necessarily mean fewer independent operators, as Lido was already controlling the merged validators before the consolidation.
