Ethereum Validators Overwhelmingly Reject Inflation Proposal

The Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 8361 has sparked controversy among validators and developers. The proposal aims to cap staking rewards at zero if the staking ratio crosses 50%, but 99.7% of 83K staked ETH amongst validators are signaling 'No'.

This non-binding check is a community sentiment gauge, indicating that the proposal may stall due to limited support. To be included in the upcoming Hegota network upgrade, the proposal must clear the Proposal for Inclusion (PFI) level, which requires evaluation of economic impact and other factors.

Critics argue that capping staking rewards would harm ETH credit markets and push DeFi to other chains. Aave CEO Stani Kulechov stated that the proposal will not make ETH a 'less viable asset' or help solo stakers, which are two of the main objectives the proposal sought to achieve.

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has come under fire for its role in proposing the measure, with critics accusing it of having an 'ivory tower academic approach' that is disconnected from the needs of builders and users. This criticism comes as ETH market sentiment has briefly turned negative amid intense debate over the inflation proposal.
