Ethereum Volatility Spikes Amid $160M Wintermute Deposit

Ethereum saw significant price volatility after reaching $2,600 and briefly dipping below $2,400. At press time, ETH traded at $2,524, with a daily gain of 2.26% and a weekly increase of 2%. The sudden drop coincided with reports of large-holder selling.

However, the situation is not as clear-cut as it seems. According to Lookonchain data, Wintermute deposited 61,847 ETH worth $160.3 million into Binance and Coinbase. While this move raised concerns about selling pressure, it's essential to note that exchange deposits can serve multiple purposes.

Market makers often transfer inventory between platforms for liquidity provision or operational reasons, which does not necessarily indicate a sale. Nevertheless, if Wintermute's deposit is intended for market sales, it could lead to increased short-term supply and downward price pressure.

The broader Exchange Supply picture remains complex. Despite Wintermute's deposit, Ethereum's overall Exchange Supply continued to decline, with reserves on Binance reaching a three-month low according to CryptoQuant data. The Exchange Supply Ratio (ESR) declined for ten consecutive days and reached 0.125 at press time, its lowest level since 2016.

This suggests that exchanges are holding a smaller share of Ethereum's circulating supply, indicating that the market is absorbing individual deposits without creating a broad buildup of immediately sellable coins. Historically, lower Exchange Supply has been associated with reduced selling pressure.
