Ethereum's CME Premium Surpasses Binance Funding Rate by 15% Annualized
Ethereum's CME futures premium has reached an annualized rate of 15%, outpacing Binance perpetual funding. This divergence affects the profitability of Ethereum basis trades, which involve capturing the difference between traditional futures and crypto perpetuals.
When the CME premium exceeds the Binance funding rate, traders can exploit this spread by using cash and carry strategies. These strategies involve buying the underlying asset in the spot market and shorting the perpetual contract to create a delta-neutral position with zero net exposure to price changes.
The CME CF Ether-Dollar Reference Rate is used as a benchmark for Ethereum's spot price, while the Binance spot index reflects the weighted average value of Ethereum on major spot exchanges. During periods of extreme market volatility, Binance reserves the right to adjust the funding interval of perpetual contracts to prevent excessive premium growth.
However, managing risks remains crucial in basis trades. Liquidation risk can be triggered by even a 5% to 8% price move against a position, while sudden changes in funding rates can flip the profitability of short positions. Traders must closely monitor the divergence between funding rate levels and realized volatility to avoid unexpected losses.
