Ethereum's Cryptographic Future Takes Shape

Ethereum's long-term vision is shifting towards becoming a 'cryptographic world computer', according to co-founder Vitalik Buterin. This future architecture combines blockchain infrastructure with cryptographic verification, privacy technologies, and decentralized off-chain computation.

The current Ethereum network is not just a blockchain anymore, said Buterin. Instead, it's evolving into a hybrid system that reduces the need for every participant to independently execute computations. Advanced cryptography and zero-knowledge technologies are key components of this shift.

Hegotá, currently planned for 2027, is expected to be Ethereum's last 'normal' fork. After that upgrade, the protocol's development will focus on recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, and quantum-resistant security.
