Ethereum's ePBS Redesign Boosts Decentralization
The Ethereum network has implemented a major upgrade to its protocol, addressing relay latency issues and simplifying validator work. The redesign of the ePBS system eliminates the need for middleware like MEV-Boost by moving the proposer-builder exchange into the protocol itself.
This change removes the influence of the small consortium of relay operators, preventing censorship and promoting decentralization. Builders now place collateralized bids, and proposers commit to the winning payload header at the start of a slot. This shift improves stability in the block production pipeline by reducing latency.
The redesign also addresses the 'free option' problem, where builders skip revealing a payload to avoid losses during market volatility. To manage this risk, the protocol implements dynamic penalties and projected feedback updates that raise or relax penalties based on exercise rates.
