Ethereum's Glamsterdam Upgrade Targets 200M Gas Limit
Ethereum's upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade aims to increase its L1 throughput by implementing parallel processing and new state-pricing rules, allowing for a higher gas limit of around 200 million. This would make Ethereum more competitive with faster chains that have made execution performance a key factor in where applications choose to build.
The current gas limit is 60 million, which has been increased from roughly 30 million since early 2025 through successive protocol improvements. Developers are targeting much higher capacity while keeping validator hardware requirements manageable.
Federico Variola, CEO of Phemex, believes decentralized exchanges could become an important measure of whether this effort succeeds, as they place heavy demands on blockchains due to users' expectations of fast execution, deep liquidity, and low costs.
