Ethereum's Grip on Stablecoin Market Strengthens with $49.5B USDC Dominance
Ethereum has solidified its position as the dominant platform for stablecoin issuance, particularly with USDC. According to recent data, over 70% of the $72 billion market cap of USDC is issued on Ethereum, totaling approximately $49.5 billion.
This dominance can be attributed to the widespread adoption of decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and institutional investment in stablecoins. Circle's USDC has grown significantly since its launch on Ethereum in September 2018, with a total supply climbing from around $60 billion in early 2023 to over $72 billion today.
The Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), introduced in 2023, has accelerated the expansion of native USDC to other blockchains. The protocol allows for seamless transfer of USDC between chains without the need for bridges or wrapped tokens.
