Ethereum's Pectra Upgrade Activates with Record Validator Numbers
The Ethereum network has undergone significant changes with the Pectra upgrade and the Holesky validator test results. The Holesky testnet reached a record 2.1 million validators, exceeding the target of 1.5 million, but this caused finalization issues due to late block arrivals and insufficient attestations.
Developers observed that the heavy validator load hit node CPU limits, providing valuable data for the upcoming Pectra mainnet activation on May 7, 2025. The Holesky testnet experienced a chain split on February 24, 2025, but teams were able to patch it quickly.
The network replaces Goerli, which was intended to be deprecated due to fragmentation in previous testnet lifecycles. Client teams aimed for 800,000 validators, but the total signup reached 1.7 million.
