Ethereum's Pectra Upgrade Simplifies Institutional Staking
The recent Ethereum upgrade known as Pectra has introduced significant changes to institutional custody standards. One of the key upgrades, EIP-7251, allows institutions to consolidate multiple small validators into a single one, reducing compute needs for nodes and making staking more efficient.
This change increases the maximum effective balance from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing larger holders to manage smaller networks. Additionally, EIP-6110 has reduced deposit processing time from 13 hours to 13 minutes.
Another notable upgrade is EIP-7002, which enables execution-layer triggerable exits, giving validators more control over withdrawals and improving business continuity. Slashing risks have also decreased significantly, with the initial slashing amount dropping from 1/32 of the balance to 1/4096 of the effective balance.
BitGo has set a threshold of 1,920 ETH for consolidation, while Zodia Custody supports the Pectra upgrade through its integration with Figment. This integration allows clients to stake ETH in Zodia wallets without having to manage validator operations or onchain reward accounting.
