Ethereum's Price Plunges Amid Recession Fears
Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, has seen significant price fluctuations over the years. As of September 17, 2026, its current price is $2,429.85, representing a $24.40 increase from yesterday and a loss of around $2,160 compared to last year.
Launched in 2014 through an initial coin offering (ICO), Ethereum's value has skyrocketed more than 60,000% since its launch price of about 31 cents per token. In the past five years, from 2020 to 2025, it has climbed another 46%, but not without experiencing dramatic ups and downs.
Its price surge in August 2025 reached nearly $5,000, a 1.6 million percent increase from its launch price. However, Ethereum's volatility is as steep as any major cryptocurrency out there, offering potential for huge gains but also significant losses.
