Ethereum's Proof-Based Future Takes Shape by 2030
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a roadmap for the Ethereum network's transformation by 2030. He envisions that the network will rely more on cryptographic proofs and off-chain computation to process transactions, rather than repeating calculations across the entire network.
The proposed shift aims to enhance privacy protection for payments, balances, and wallet activities by storing and verifying proofs primarily on-chain. This would allow users to independently confirm results without replaying all transactions.
Buterin notes that this transformation is set to accelerate after the planned Hegota upgrade, which he describes as likely the last technical hard fork related to traditional development. Afterward, the main focus will shift towards recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus, and quantum-resistant replacements.
The 2030 roadmap also includes expanding authorization from ordinary signatures to quantum-resistant signatures or zero-knowledge proofs, moving consensus towards fewer slots for finality, and shifting block construction from a single entity to multiple participants. The network is designed to enhance performance through parallel storage, computation, and privacy technologies.
