Ethereum's Quick Slots Proposal: Speeding Up Without Sacrificing Decentralization
Ethereum's potential to speed up its block production without sacrificing decentralization has long been a topic of discussion. Recently, EIP-8198, also known as Quick Slots, has emerged as a possible solution. This proposal aims to gradually increase the network's block time from 12 seconds to 10 seconds and beyond, allowing for more efficient state updates and a better user experience.
The core idea behind EIP-8198 is not to drastically cut down the block time, but rather to allow it to be adjusted safely. This approach has been advanced in other areas, such as capacity expansion, where gas limits are raised according to client availability. The same logic can be applied to latency.
DeFi founders and application developers believe that faster block production will have a significant impact on the mainnet's market efficiency. They argue that with shorter slots, on-chain liquidity updates more frequently, reducing the window for outdated quotes and improving market-making conditions. This, in turn, can make the mainnet a more competitive global settlement layer.
Austin Adams from Doppler noted that faster slots directly improve LP returns and make capital markets more efficient. Josh Kim from Derive pointed out that waiting for an L1 transaction to finalize exposes arbitrageurs to price risk, affecting their ability to rebalance the market and maintain narrow spreads.
