Ethereum's Stablecoin Gas Fee Plan Hits Roadblocks Ahead of 2027 Upgrade
Ethereum's EIP-8141 aims to allow users to pay gas fees in stablecoins, rather than ETH. The proposal is currently scheduled for implementation with Hegota, a planned Ethereum upgrade set for Q2 2027.
The draft splits Ethereum transactions into separate frames, enabling native support for stablecoin payments without the need for third-party services. EIP-8141's authors include Vitalik Buterin and several other developers.
However, the proposal is still in its draft stage, and core developers have raised concerns about potential denial-of-service risks and mempool issues. The specification may change before deployment, and a competing proposal, EIP-8130, is also being considered.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin noted that 'a lot of progress' has been made on the Frames project over the past few months. While Frame Transactions would likely reduce daily ETH demand, validators would still receive fees in ETH, maintaining its role in settlement.
