A group of young men, mostly in their late teens or early twenties, stole over $240 million worth of Bitcoin from a Washington D.C. resident in August 2024.

The scammers, led by Malone Lam, used social engineering tactics to dupe the victim into revealing security codes that allowed them to siphon off 4,100 Bitcoins.

After the heist, the group embarked on a lavish spending spree, buying sports cars, private jets, and renting mansions in Miami and the Hamptons. Lam alone spent over $569,000 in one night at a Los Angeles nightclub.

The FBI eventually caught up with the scammers, arresting Lam and 17 others. The investigation has highlighted the growing problem of cryptocurrency investment fraud, which rose by nearly 50% in 2025.
