Ethereum's Stablecoin Upgrade: A New Path to Utility

The Ethereum network is working on an upgrade that could redefine the utility of its native token ETH. The Frames (EIP-8141) update, shared by Vitalik Buterin on X, would allow users to pay gas fees with stablecoins instead of ETH.

This change decouples ETH fees from the value of the cryptocurrency, as they are currently linked. However, this might surprise some analysts who expected a focus on improving Ethereum's speed and throughput.

The update could be part of a broader strategy to make Ethereum more accessible to users, particularly in cross-border payments and settlements. The network already hosts nearly 50% of the total stablecoin liquidity, totaling approximately $147 billion.
