Ethereum's Staking Reward Burn Proposal Withdrawn Amid Ecosystem Concerns
The Ethereum community has been shaken by the withdrawal of EIP-8363, a proposal to burn staking rewards in the Hegotá upgrade. The move was announced by co-proposer Jérôme de Tychey on October 1.
EIP-8363, also known as Tapered Issuance Burn, aimed to reduce validator rewards as more ETH is staked. Its burn fraction would rise with the staking ratio until it reaches 100% at a fixed saturation balance, which is half of the ETH supply.
The proposal's authors argued that this change was necessary to prevent Ethereum's monetary policy from giving validators an incentive to push the staking ratio higher. They claimed that over 70 million ETH, or more than 55% of the supply, could be staked by January 1, 2028.
However, the proposal faced opposition from several key figures in the Ethereum ecosystem, including Aave founder Stani Kulechov and Lido contributors. They argued that reducing staking rewards would discourage smaller independent stakers while giving large institutions a greater relative advantage.
