Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin Sounds Alarm on AI-Driven Blockchain De-anonymization
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, sounded an alarm about the threat of AI-driven deanonymization on blockchain networks. Speaking at the 12th Global Blockchain Summit in September, he emphasized that relying on pseudonyms and fake usernames is no longer sufficient to maintain anonymity.
The problem lies in the vast amounts of metadata generated by blockchain transactions, which can be used to identify individuals through AI analysis. Buterin pointed out that this means even hiding one's real name is not enough, as an AI can piece together a person's identity from seemingly innocuous data points like transaction timestamps and sizes.
To address this issue, Buterin proposed the concept of 'programmable privacy,' which would grant users granular control over what information is revealed in transactions. This approach utilizes modern cryptographic techniques to extend protection beyond simple asset transfers, enabling selective disclosure of only necessary details.
