Ethiopia's Crypto Mining Boom Tests Power Allocation and Economic Value
Ethiopia's cryptocurrency mining industry has grown exponentially due to the country's abundant and cheap renewable electricity. However, this boom raises questions about the allocation of power and whether it generates greater economic value than other uses.
The Ethiopian Energy Outlook 2025 projects that electricity consumed by data centers, primarily crypto-mining operations, could exceed 8 terawatt-hours in 2025, equivalent to approximately 30 percent of the country's total electricity demand. This is a significant shift, as nearly half the population still lacks reliable electricity.
The government's own Energy Outlook questions whether electricity allocated to crypto mining might produce greater value through exports, general electrification, or productive activities such as agricultural water pumping. The trade-off becomes more important because Ethiopia does not have an electricity system where every unit of generating capacity can easily reach every potential consumer.
Nomination tariffs are expected to rise substantially through 2028, with the Energy Outlook describing increases of around 400 percent over the reform period. This could reduce the incentive for miners to invest in Ethiopia, as higher electricity prices would make it less competitive compared to other locations.
