EU Ban on Anonymity-Enhancing Cryptos Set to Take Effect in July 2027
An upcoming EU regulation is set to affect crypto-asset service providers in Europe. The ban on anonymity-enhancing cryptocurrencies, specifically Monero (XMR), Zcash (ZEC), and Dash (DASH), will come into effect on July 10, 2027.
The regulation prohibits companies from keeping anonymous accounts or accounts that permit anonymisation or obfuscation of transactions to a high degree. This includes anonymity-enhancing cryptocurrencies as one route to achieve this end.
Existing holdings in these assets may be affected if the platforms where they are stored reshuffle their range of supported assets.
A precedent for how this might play out has already been set by Kraken, which forcibly converted Monero holdings in 2024. The platform removed trading and deposits for Monero markets, allowing withdrawals until December 31, 2024, before automatically converting remaining balances to Bitcoin (BTC) at the market rate.
This move is not directly related to the EU regulation but shows how a platform might handle such situations. It's also worth noting that a forced conversion can be considered a taxable event for investors, with tax implications varying depending on individual circumstances.
