EU Cryptocurrency Regulation Under Review Amid Market Evolution
The European Commission has launched a consultation on the future of cryptocurrency regulation in the EU. The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), which became fully applicable on December 30, 2024, is under review.
The consultation aims to determine whether the current rules for cryptoassets remain fit for purpose as the market evolves. Stakeholders have until August 31, 2026, to respond via an online questionnaire.
The Commission noted that significant developments in cryptocurrency and distributed ledger technology (DLT) since MiCA was adopted could enable faster cross-border payments and innovative financial services, but also carry risks. Regulatory approaches in other parts of the world have evolved in the meantime.
