EU Financial Sector's Reliance on Foreign Digital Services Sparks Geopolitical Concerns
The European financial sector is heavily reliant on foreign digital infrastructure and services, particularly cloud computing, data centers, and artificial intelligence models. This exposure to non-EU providers has raised concerns that it could amplify the impact of geopolitical shocks and multiply operational disruptions.
The European Supervisory Authorities (ESA), which include the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), have issued a warning about the risks associated with this digital dependence. They point out that if tensions between regions escalate or there are significant technological blackouts, the risk index could increase rapidly.
The ESA's concerns are not new, as Bank of England Governor had previously highlighted similar risks and Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed legislation to slow down the development of AI technology. However, President Donald Trump's stance on not intervening in AI development suggests that this bill may not be passed.
