EU Regulated Commodity Markets Get New Reporting Framework in September 2026

EU-regulated commodity markets will soon see significant changes as ESMA sets September 3, 2026, as the official start date for weekly commodity derivatives position reporting.

This move marks a shift from less frequent or standardized reporting cycles, requiring firms to have systems capable of generating consistent, compliant submissions on a rolling weekly basis.

According to ESMA, market participants will be required to submit weekly position reports in line with updated requirements using XML schema version 2.0, which dictates the structure for formatting, validating, and transmitting data.

The new framework aims to provide ESMA with a more current picture of positions across EU-regulated commodity markets, helping to monitor concentration risk and market activity in energy and raw-material derivatives.
