EU Reviews Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation Amid Evolving Market Landscape
The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) is undergoing a review to determine if it remains suitable for the evolving crypto market and international rules. The European Commission initiated public and targeted consultations on May 20, 2026, which covered various aspects of MiCA, including crypto-assets, asset-referenced tokens, e-money tokens, and service providers.
The consultation aimed to assess whether MiCA's scope and definitions adequately address newer market developments and activities. The European Banking Authority (EBA) recommended strengthening the regulation regarding multi-issuer stablecoin schemes and clarifying boundaries under MiCA. The EBA also suggested including crypto-asset lending, connected to decentralized finance, within the regulatory review.
The review's outcome may lead to legislative proposals or changes in MiCA's application. For US participants operating across the EU, the review could shape the bloc's rules for issuers and service providers. Any potential amendments remain prospective until the Commission completes its review and presents a report by June 30, 2027.
