EU Sanctions Against Russia Hang in Balance Amid Dispute Over Two Billionaires
The European Union's ambassadors met in Brussels to discuss the renewal of sanctions against Russia, but the process has stalled due to disagreements between France and Luxembourg. The two countries are pushing to remove Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the sanctions list, citing national security concerns and a legal dispute involving $16 billion in frozen assets.
The current sanctions package covers around 3,000 individuals and entities tied to Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, including asset freezes and travel bans. The EU requires unanimous consent every six months for the sanctions to remain in effect.
The sticking points between France and Luxembourg are Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, with the former being linked to Azerbaijan and the latter involved in a high-stakes legal dispute. Several ambassadors have warned that yielding to these demands could erode the credibility of the entire sanctions framework.
