EU Sanctions Iranian Judges and Cyber Group Founder

The European Union has imposed sanctions on five Iranian judges and the founder of a prominent cyber group. This move targets individuals involved in politically motivated trials, including death sentences, imprisonment, and flogging orders against dissidents.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was among those subjected to these trials. The Ashiyane Digital Security group, founded by Nima Salehi, has carried out cyber-attacks against domestic political opponents with the coordination of Iran's Cyber Police and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The sanctions package includes asset freezes and travel bans, which are standard tools in the EU's human rights enforcement toolkit. This is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a growing campaign by Brussels to address Iran's human rights record.

The designation of Ashiyane signals that the EU is increasingly willing to target the digital infrastructure of authoritarian regimes, not just their government officials. This has implications for crypto and digital finance as regulated financial entities in Europe will now have to screen against six additional names.
