EUDI Wallet Deadlines Set for 2026 and 2027 as Germany Sets Own Target Date
The EUDI Wallet has been a topic of discussion for years, but its deadlines have not been well-defined. Two deadlines can be derived from the text of the regulation and confirmed independently: December 24, 2026, when member states must make at least one wallet available, and December 24, 2027, when private parties must accept it under certain conditions. Germany has set January 2, 2027 as its own target date.
The EUDI Wallet is an electronic identification means that allows personal identification data and electronic attestations of attributes to be stored, managed, and validated. It also enables the creation of qualified electronic signatures and seals. The regulation does not mention cryptocurrencies or wallets for crypto-assets.
Crypto exchanges may accept the EUDI Wallet in future due to its potential benefits, such as verified state identity making account opening cheaper. However, they are currently not verifiably obliged to do so, as this would require them to fall under financial services and choose the electronic identification route under anti-money laundering regulations.
The German target date of January 2, 2027 is nine days after the European deadline of December 24, 2026. Technical implementation in Germany is being led by the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernisation, with various agencies involved.
