Expert Witnesses Navigate Global Crypto Disputes with Blockchain Expertise
Crypto disputes have become increasingly global and complex, requiring expert investigators and testifying witnesses to navigate blockchain technology and explain findings clearly to counsel and courts.
Five experts from FTI Technology's Blockchain and Digital Assets team shared their experiences providing guidance across dozens of investigations and litigations. They stressed the importance of a genuine interest in the technology, deep learning, experience, and certifications to earn court confidence in their credentials.
The experts work on various types of cases, including connecting evidentiary findings from digital forensics, digital asset tracing, and source code analysis for blockchain-based decentralized applications. They also emphasize the need for a broad, layered level of expertise that combines knowledge of technology, law, finance, and criminology.
The experts mentioned that not every case involves a 'smoking gun,' but rather requires time, intuition, and technical understanding to find and make sense of a large body of evidence. They also highlighted the misconception that cryptocurrency transactions are anonymous or untraceable, when in fact they are pseudonymous with an immutable, public record on the blockchain.
