Fairshake Boosts Midterm Spending to Advance Crypto Legislation
Fairshake, a crypto-focused political group, is significantly increasing its spending ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, backing 32 House incumbents from both parties. The group has disclosed at least $6 million for six candidates, with $1 million allocated to each, while the remaining 26 races have undisclosed spending amounts. The push comes after the CLARITY Act, a key market structure bill for the crypto industry, stalled in the Senate, making the upcoming elections crucial for the industry's legislative agenda.
The 32 candidates supported by Fairshake include 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats, all of whom backed the CLARITY Act when it passed the House in 2025. The six candidates receiving $1 million each are evenly split between the two parties and include key figures like French Hill, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, and Bryan Steil, who leads its Digital Assets subcommittee. Fairshake emphasizes its bipartisan approach, focusing on candidates who support crypto innovation rather than aligning with a single political party.
Fairshake's strategy extends beyond competitive seats, supporting influential lawmakers who could shape financial services, taxation, and digital asset legislation in the next Congress. The group had approximately $108 million in cash on hand at the end of August, with a broader network reporting roughly $120 million available. Major backers include Coinbase, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz, reflecting the industry's push for clearer digital asset rules.
Despite its bipartisan approach, Fairshake's spending has attracted criticism, particularly its $30 million investment opposing Democratic candidate Sherrod Brown in the Ohio Senate race. Critics like Sen. Ruben Gallego argue that targeting individual senators could complicate future bipartisan negotiations needed to pass legislation. The upcoming election will determine the future of crypto market structure legislation, with the new Congress set to begin in January 2027.
