Fairshake Drops Record $30M to Block Sherrod Brown's Senate Comeback
The cryptocurrency industry's leading campaign-funding operation, Fairshake, has committed $30 million to defeating Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown's re-election bid. This massive spending effort is a repeat of two years ago when Fairshake spent $40 million to defeat Brown, helping remove a roadblock for crypto advocates in the Senate.
The current Republican majority in the Senate has been beneficial for crypto proponents, despite the recent failed vote on a key bill. A Brown win could shift the needle toward the Democrats' narrow chance of taking back the majority. Additionally, Brown's critical views of the crypto sector had been a thorn in the side of businesses that backed Fairshake and its affiliates, mainly Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
The digital assets industry has spent years trying to pass U.S. market structure legislation through the Senate Banking Committee, which Brown once led. Once Fairshake's spending helped unseat him two years ago, the committee successfully dealt with a major bill regulating stablecoin issuers and nearly reached the finish line on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
