FASB Proposes Stablecoin Guidance Amid Consistency Concerns

Share

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has proposed guidance for when companies can classify certain stablecoins as cash equivalents under US accounting principles. The proposal adds illustrative examples to the existing definition of qualifying digital assets, addressing inconsistent treatment of these assets.

According to the FASB, a qualifying digital asset must have an on-demand contractual redemption right, a direct redemption right with its issuer for a known cash amount, and at least one-to-one segregated reserves held in short-term, highly liquid assets. For example, having active secondary markets is not enough if the holder lacks a direct issuer redemption right.

The FASB has also provided an example that disqualifies a token due to valuation risks: reserves comprising crypto assets and gold. Companies retain the choice of whether to present qualifying assets as cash equivalents and must consider relevant laws and regulations.
