FATF Sounds Alarm on Global Crypto Oversight Gaps Amid AI Crime Surge
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has issued its seventh compliance report on virtual assets, warning of an operational gap in global oversight amid the rise of AI crypto crimes.
According to the report, 86% of 147 evaluated jurisdictions have completed their virtual asset risk assessments, and 83% have enacted specific regulations to implement the Travel Rule. However, only 10% of these jurisdictions have satisfactorily satisfied preventive anti-money laundering standards.
The FATF also highlighted that stablecoins account for 84% of all illicit transaction volume tracked in the crypto asset industry. This is particularly concerning given the rise of AI-powered fraud schemes, which are using synthetic identity generation and automated smart contract exploits to facilitate financial crimes.
In response to these findings, the FATF has announced that future mutual evaluations will require the adoption of blockchain analytics and tracking tools as mandatory baseline criteria to measure each country's effectiveness in combating crypto-related crime.
