FBI Agent Accused of Stealing Nearly $1 Million in Cryptocurrency

Share

FBI agent Patrick Steven Yaroch is accused of stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from accounts monitored by the agency. The alleged theft occurred while Yaroch was a member of the FBI's national security investigative squad focused on an 'adversarial nation'. He grew frustrated with what he saw as government inaction over the misuse of crypto accounts, according to court records.

Yaroch allegedly transferred the cryptocurrency holdings to his personal account using his internal agency access. The FBI fired him and arrested him last week on charges related to the interstate transport of stolen goods and the receipt of stolen goods.

An affidavit in Yaroch's case reflects how artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies are changing criminal investigations. The month before his arrest, Yaroch allegedly asked ChatGPT for advice on how to leave the USA with a large amount of money and become an EU resident or citizen.

The FBI spokesperson stated that 'as soon as the FBI became aware of these allegations, we immediately took action, began an investigation, and ultimately executed an arrest warrant for this individual last week.' The agency holds its employees to high ethical standards and will conduct a thorough investigation.
