FBI Agent Charged with Stealing $900K in Cryptocurrency
An FBI agent has been accused of stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from accounts monitored by the agency.
The agent, Patrick Steven Yaroch, was a member of the FBI's national security investigative squad and allegedly transferred the crypto holdings to his personal account after becoming frustrated with government inaction over the misuse of crypto accounts.
According to court records, Yaroch grew 'frustrated when he could not do more to disrupt' an unnamed person's use of the crypto accounts. He later asked ChatGPT for advice on what to do with a hypothetical $1 million and responded himself by describing his ideal lifestyle in Europe.
The FBI fired Yaroch and arrested him last week, charging him with interstate transport of stolen goods and receipt of stolen goods.
