FBI Agent Fired for Alleged Crypto Theft After Seeking ChatGPT Advice

A former FBI supervisory agent has been arrested and charged with stealing approximately $1 million in cryptocurrency from 'adversarial cryptocurrency accounts'.

The alleged theft occurred over a period of roughly a dozen transactions, starting in late 2024 or early 2025, using private keys discovered by the agent. The funds were then mixed with his personal assets and used to consider investment options through ChatGPT.

In a series of searches, Yaroch asked the chatbot how to spend or invest $1 million and whether he should relocate to Europe. ChatGPT suggested Portugal as an option based on the agent's family circumstances, including the size of his desired estate and interest in wine.

The FBI fired Yaroch on July 31 after discovering his alleged activities. He has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods and receipt of stolen goods, securities, and money.
