FBI Counterintelligence Agent Arrested for $1 Million Crypto Heist

Share

A high-ranking FBI agent has been arrested and charged with stealing over $1 million in cryptocurrency from accounts tied to foreign individuals he had investigated.

The supervisory special agent, Patrick Steven Yarmoch, held a 'top secret' security clearance and worked in counterintelligence at the FBI's national headquarters.

According to court documents, Yarmoch used his access to dig up cryptocurrency keys from FBI systems and made transfers to himself via Kraken and Suilend, a decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem on the Sui blockchain.

The investigation revealed that Yarmoch had been using AI apps to research how to leave the US with $1 million and become a citizen of an EU country, with Portugal being recommended as a favorable destination.
