The FBI has charged two brothers, Vladislav and Stanislav Chernyshov, with selling counterfeit opioids on the darknet. Investigators used blockchain analytics to trace $230,000 in Bitcoin transactions linked to their vendor account, 'BarbaraWhite', which allegedly contributed to at least 12 overdoses and three fatalities.

The brothers sold highly potent nitazene-laced pills under the guise of legitimate medications using marketplaces like Nemesis, Bohemia, and Abacus since at least 2020. The BarbaraWhite account moved over 95,000 counterfeit pills through these platforms, accounting for a significant portion of the US opioid crisis.

Chainalysis Reactor, a blockchain analytics tool, was used to map the wallet activity of BarbaraWhite, identifying Bitcoin addresses used to withdraw funds from darknet sales and tracing payments to a China-based chemical supplier and other vendors. The investigation also linked the pseudonymous darknet activity to the real-world identities of the Chernyshovs.
