FBI Supervisor Accused of Stealing $925,000 in Crypto from Russia

Share

FBI Supervisor Patrick Yaroch is facing federal charges for allegedly stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from Russia. According to court documents, Yaroch said he became 'frustrated' that the FBI couldn't act against adversarial cryptocurrency accounts, and made up to a dozen transfers from these accounts into his personal wallet.

The total value of all transferred funds was approximately $925,426.07. The FBI searched Yaroch's home and found his FBI credentials and details of his cryptocurrency wallets. Yaroch confessed to the allegations, stating that he wanted to get it off his chest because it 'was eating him up inside.'

Yaroch submitted an online FBI self-report form and voluntarily met with personnel at FBI headquarters to discuss his actions. He told them that he had 'screwed up.' However, the affidavit notes that Yaroch never interacted with anyone associated with the adversarial accounts.

The FBI immediately took action upon becoming aware of the allegations, firing Yaroch from the Bureau and conducting a thorough investigation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Lindsey R. Vaala ordered Yaroch temporarily detained on Monday, with a hearing set for Tuesday.
