FCA Issues Guidance on Crypto Authorization Requirements
Britain's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has released comprehensive guidance on what cryptocurrency business activities require formal authorization under its new regulatory framework, set to launch in October 2027. The FCA will evaluate authorization needs based on a company's actual functions and services provided, not just their business descriptions.
The application window for the new authorization system opens on September 30, with a complete transition scheduled for October 25, 2027. Existing registrations and regulatory permissions won't automatically transfer to the new framework, so companies must apply separately if they want transitional accommodations.
International operators, including American firms serving British clients or conducting operations in the UK market, may need FCA authorization, regardless of existing US licensing. The FCA emphasizes that understanding how the new framework impacts a company's operations is key to preparing for regulation.
