FCA Opens Authorisation Window for Crypto Firms
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is giving crypto firms a chance to apply for authorisation before a new regulatory regime takes effect in late 2027. This marks the first time crypto firms operating in the UK will be brought under full FCA regulation, with clear standards covering consumer protection, safeguarding, market integrity, and financial resilience. The FCA states that this move signals the UK's commitment to providing protections for investors and giving the sector legitimacy through a proper regulatory framework.
Firms must apply for authorisation by February 28, 2027, ahead of the new regime coming into force on October 25, 2027. However, authorisation is not automatic and firms will need to demonstrate that they meet the FCA's requirements. Those that cannot show the necessary standards will not be authorised to operate in the UK market.
The FCA's goal is to define the UK's crypto sector by integrity, trust, growth, and innovation. This move reflects the government and FCA's determination to achieve this goal.
