FCA Opens Gateway for New Crypto Regime Amid Industry Transformation
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has announced that its application gateway for the country's new cryptoasset regime will open on September 30, 2026. The main application window will run through February 28, 2027, ahead of the new regime taking effect on October 25, 2027.
The incoming regime moves much of the industry into the standard Financial Services and Markets Act structure, meaning firms will be assessed as authorized financial businesses rather than merely appearing on a crypto anti-money-laundering register. Established exchanges and custodians are likely to need to demonstrate governance, financial resources, operational resilience, controls, and senior-management responsibilities.
For smaller firms, the decision to become authorized may involve building compliance operations, restructuring services, or leaving the UK market altogether. The FCA has been offering pre-application support ahead of the gateway opening, but September 30 marks the start of the practical transition from preparation to actual application submission.
