Fed Rate Futures Hit All-Time High as Traders Eye July FOMC Meeting
The Federal Reserve's interest rate futures market has reached an all-time high as traders prepare for the July FOMC meeting. The SOFR (Secured Overnight Financing Rate) futures open interest surged past 15.8 million contracts in recent weeks, a record-breaking number.
The SR3 contract, used by leveraged funds to bet on short-term interest rates, reached an all-time high of 14.2 million contracts. Leveraged funds have been taking short positions at an unprecedented pace, suggesting genuine conviction rather than mere hedging.
One specific contract stands out: the December-dated SOFR contract (SR3Z6), which saw its open interest jump 28% over two months, surpassing 1.8 million contracts.
