Fed Rate Hike Highlights Crypto Industry's Nuanced Exposure
A recent increase in interest rates by the Federal Reserve can have different effects on various businesses within the crypto industry. For stablecoin issuers, higher interest rates can boost returns on their reserves, but borrowers who took out loans to buy Bitcoin may face larger interest bills.
Circle's second-quarter filing showed that reserve income accounted for 95.2% of revenue in the three months ended June 30, 2026, with returns tracking close to the secured overnight financing rate (SOFR). This means that the number of stablecoins outstanding and their backing earnings can significantly impact an issuer's revenue.
On the other hand, borrowers who took out floating-rate loans may face a reset in their borrowing rates, making it more expensive for them to repay their debt. In contrast, companies with fixed-rate borrowing obligations do not automatically become more expensive when Treasury yields move.
