Fed Rate Hike Wrecks Bitcoin Price, Then Steadies
The Bitcoin price saw some volatility following the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023. The new rate range is between 3.75% and 4%. The move was anticipated, with traders expecting a more than 90% chance of a rate hike ahead of the September meeting.
Bitcoin dropped briefly to $75,355 before rebounding to around $75,813 in the following hours. Over the past seven days, the cryptocurrency is down nearly 4%. Traders had likely locked in their trades before the announcement, as most major Bitcoin moves occurred beforehand.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that price stability in the US is a top priority and that inflation remains too high. He noted that summer's inflation readings do not indicate an improvement in underlying trends. This stance appears to go against President Donald Trump's calls for lower interest rates, with Trump even threatening to fire the previous Fed Chair for refusing to lower rates.
The decision to raise interest rates reduces liquidity and could put pressure on cryptocurrency prices and adoption, particularly amid rising consumer and oil-driven costs in the US. This environment is typically less favorable for Bitcoin.
