Feds Warn of Rising Crypto Scams Targeting Seniors
Federal and state investigators are warning Georgians about a surge in cryptocurrency scams, which have resulted in significant financial losses for many victims.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report that older adults are disproportionately targeted by these scammers because they may have larger retirement savings and less familiarity with cryptocurrency investments.
In one notable case, a retired couple in Georgia lost nearly $800,000 after being convinced to transfer their savings into what appeared to be a legitimate cryptocurrency investment account. The account was later found to be fraudulent.
The FBI warns that these scams often begin with unsolicited messages or fake job offers and can involve fake websites, messages, voices, and investment platforms that are difficult to detect.
