Solana has demonstrated remarkable resilience over the past two years, with no reported mainnet outages, according to a report by Fidelity’s Center for Applied Technology (FCAT). The network has shown significant improvements in resilience, economic security, and performance indicators. Key factors contributing to its economic security include substantial staking participation and incentives that reward validator performance. Additionally, low latency, expanded capacity, and inexpensive transactions support practical use at scale.
Despite these advancements, the report highlights areas that require continued observation. Concentrations in stake, hosting, and client software could pose threats to the network's stability. Specifically, the report notes that decentralization and resilience could be compromised by stake concentrations among a small number of validator identities and operators.
In related developments, Solana recently reduced its slot time to 350 milliseconds, marking the first such reduction since the network's inception. The Solana Foundation’s vice president of technology, Jacob Creech, announced this change. Further reductions to 200 milliseconds are planned, with three additional 50-millisecond reductions scheduled. These adjustments aim to improve latency and accelerate confirmations on the blockchain network.
